I wanted to join the Air Force Reserves right out of high school for the 4 year contract and still attend college in the fall. Wayne looked forward to family visits back to Boston to enjoy the love of his family, the Red Sox, Cape Cod and lobster among many other things.Ī memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church, 101 N. Wayne enjoyed traveling extensively, watching movies with family, gardening and fishing. Wayne will be remembered for his selflessness, respect, care and love of his family, friends and many others who shared in his life. He also leaves behind his beautiful mother Joan Doherty of Avon MA, his sister Virginia Barrett and her husband Bob of Quincy MA, his brother Derek Doherty and his wife Kate of Woburn MA, and many more loving family and friends. Three wonderful sons Sean, Jake and Sam Doherty, were born to Wayne and his ex-spouse, Lori Doherty, all of Columbia. Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jo Doherty (Long). Notably, Wayne was also recognized as Headquarters Air Force Space Command Personnel Manager of the Year in 1999.Īfter retirement and during his journey with cancer, Wayne served on the Board of Directors of the General Omar Bradley Chapter of the Military Officer’s Association of America and was recognized as that organization’s Citizen Of The Year in 2021. His many service awards included the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Army Commendation Medal. Wayne was a graduate of the Air Force Squadron Officer School, the Army Command & General Staff College, the Joint Combined War-fighting School, and the Air War College. He was medically retired from his Command and the Air Force in December, 2013. Col Doherty became Commander of AFROTC Detachment 440 and Professor of Aerospace Studies at the University of Missouri, Columbia. While on active duty, Wayne earned a Master’s Degree in Space Systems Management from Webster University and Air Force designation as a Master Space and Missile Operator. His notable non-operations assignments included tours as Assignments Officer & Career Field manager, Air Force Space Command, Peterson AFB, Colorado in the Pentagon as Chief of International Air Attaché Affairs, Foreign Liaison Division, Headquarters USAF and as Instructor & Chief of Joint Space Operations, US Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. ![]() The majority of his ensuing 12 military assignments were served in a wide variety of positions directing and conducting operations for various Ballistic Missile, satellite, and ground-based missile warning and space surveillance systems. Thus began Wayne’s distinguished 23 year military career when he graduated from the University of Vermont, commissioned as a Second Lieutenant & designated a Distinguished Graduate of Saint Michael’s College AFROTC Program. He graduated from Boston Latin High School in 1986 and then attended The University of Vermont, where he joined the AFROTC program and graduated in 1990. Wayne was born Augand grew up in Dorchester, MA. After a difficult 12 year long journey Wayne beat service connected cancer on his own terms by how he lived and loved. Wayne passed away surrounded by his family on December 22, 2022. ![]() Now that God has called him home, his journey with cancer has ended peacefully.
